TikTok pixel not firing: how to find out why
Start with the Network tab: either nothing reaches analytics.tiktok.com, which is an install or consent problem on your site, or events do go out and TikTok just is not showing them yet. Reporting can take up to 24 hours, and the ad group must use the same pixel and an active optimisation event.
Check your own site: the free scan tells you in about a minute whether this problem is on your page.
First: does anything leave the browser?
Open your site in a private window with no extensions, open DevTools on the Network tab, filter on analytics.tiktok.com, accept the cookie banner and reload. You will see one of three things:
- Nothing at all. The pixel script never loaded. Go to "The pixel never loads" below.
events.jsloads, but no request to/api/v2/pixel. The pixel is there but sends nothing. Go to "The pixel loads but sends nothing".- Requests to
/api/v2/pixel. Your site is doing its part. Open one and look at the Payload:context.pixel.codeis the pixel it went to. Go to "Events go out, but TikTok shows nothing".
The pixel never loads
- The consent tool never releases it. If your consent tool blocks the pixel until the visitor accepts, check which category it is filed under. A pixel filed as "marketing" stays blocked when the banner's accept only covers "statistics", or when the consent tool's own script fails to load.
- The Tag Manager tag is not live. A TikTok tag that is paused, sits in an unpublished workspace, or has a trigger that never fires. Check the live container version, not the workspace.
- An app was disconnected. On Shopify and other shop platforms, the pixel usually comes from the TikTok sales channel. Disconnecting or reinstalling it, or switching TikTok accounts, can leave the shop without a pixel or with a new pixel code your ads do not use.
- It was only ever on some pages. A pixel added to the thank-you page but not the rest of the site (or the other way round) is easy to miss. Check the page where the event should happen.
The pixel loads but sends nothing
- Consent is held and never granted. With TikTok's own consent switch, the site calls
ttq.holdConsent()so the pixel waits, and must callttq.grantConsent()when the visitor accepts. If the accept button is not wired to that call, the pixel keeps waiting. - The base code is incomplete. The standard snippet loads the script with your pixel code and then calls
ttq.page()for the page view. A snippet edited by hand, or copied without that last line, loadsevents.jsand stops. - Your own events never run. Calls like
ttq.track('AddToCart', …)that sit in a theme file the shop no longer uses, or behind a click handler on a button that was redesigned, send nothing.
Events go out, but TikTok shows nothing
TikTok's own troubleshooting article lists these, and they cover most cases:
- It is too early. Event data can take up to 24 hours, sometimes a bit more, to appear in Events Manager.
- A test event does not count. Activity sent from the Test events tab does not activate the pixel. TikTok needs a real action on your site, such as a purchase with a test card or a 100% coupon.
- The ad group uses another pixel. In Ads Manager, open the ad group and check that Data connection is the pixel whose code you saw in the payload, and that the optimisation event shows as Active in Events Manager.
- Your server already sends it. If the shop also sends events through TikTok's Events API, check both carry the same
event_id, or TikTok counts them twice once the pixel works again.
Confirm it works
- TikTok Pixel Helper, a Chrome extension, shows each event the page sends and warns about missing parameters.
- In TikTok Events Manager, open the pixel's Test events tab to watch events arrive live while you click through the site.
- Then complete a real action and check the pixel's details page the next day.
Our TikTok pixel checker runs the Network-tab check for you, before and after consent, and walks to a product and the cart.
